Computers and Cars

I've long thought that the computer industry is going through many of the same changes that the auto industry went through years ago.

There used to be an old joke, you could buy any color of Ford you wanted as long as it was black. Back then, Ford dominated the industry, and there was hardly any other choice. But competition brought changes and consumer choice, Ford had to make changes or go out of business.

There was a time when Microsoft had a stranglehold on the industry, and if you wanted to get a good computer, you had to have one that ran MS-DOS or Windows. But just as Ford found itself facing competition, Microsoft finds that it too faces competition on both the low and high ends. Microsoft can't be all things to all people.

A couple of days ago I was watching a History Channel show on the early days of Cadillac. One of the things mentioned was that Cadillac was the first automaker to employ a full time professional stylist. And the first thing that popped into my mind was Jonathon Ive of Apple.

The similarities seem to go on and on.
