Garage Band

There were three reasons why I bought MaCei.

One, OS 9 software was getting a little dated. It was getting harder and harder to find things that would work.

Two, I wanted an iPod to carry my music library with me and it was difficult to get an iPod to syncronize with my iMac at the time.

And three, Garage Band.

Apple is pursuing a great strategy. Out of the box, they provide some pretty nifty software to create content. Now it is all in the iLife suite, but at the time there were still some rough edges. Still, the idea was great. You could take digital content and create your own DVDs.

And of course, once they had you hooked, they could sell you the Pro versions of the software which were among the industry's best and could use everything the entry level iLife suite apps could and more.

Garage Band was the thing that hooked me. Here is what was essentially a combination instrument and multitrack recorder, all in a really nice easy to use package. That is one of the things that Apple does tremendously well (usually), they think about the user interface so you don't have to learn that much about the program.

Of course, the program is fairly limited without a keyboard, and I picked up a M-Audio Radium from Musician's Friend.

I'm really more of an editor than a musician, I'm not much more advanced than hunt and peck on the keyboard. I am getting better though.

My very first song Jaunt (link removed for technical reasons) turned out exactly right the first time and sold me forever.

As far as I am concerned, iMacs with iLife should be in every classroom so kids can use them.
