How much is that iPod Touch in the Window?

Shiny stuff

The new iPod touch meets my criteria to replace my Palm TX.

First and foremost, it's not a cellphone. My paranoid tendencies aside, the cellphone coverage in Western rural areas ranges from lousy to occasionally good. Outside of the major cities, you're not going to find something that can support a smartphone. I know, I've looked. I happen to think that most cellphone plans are overpriced. When you consider what I am paying for a TracFone that runs on Verizon in my area and then look at Verizon's (often changing) prices for the same basic service, well, if TracFone is making a profit off me than Verizon is stealing it's customers blind.

I think there is still life left in the "PDA" niche, just no one except Apple has bothered to address it for years. Addresses, a calendar, notes, and a music player would be fine for most folks. Add the ability to load customized programs and many would never look anywhere else.

Which is why the major cell carriers really don't like the idea. A smartphone racks up the connection charges, a PDA not so much.

Third, I wanted certain features out of the box. It had to handle addresses, calendar, and notes. It had to easily synchronize with my Mac. It had to handle voice memos. And it had to have a decent camera. Not a great one, but a decent one. I'm still looking at a dedicated digital recorder and dedicated camera for the high end stuff, but I can't justify buying those right now.

So yes, I'm going to buy probably in the next few months.
